Description

WHERE reports the location where the activity was performed. WHERE is coded based on the respondent's report of where the activity took place as well as the location implicit in the activity codes. In contrast to ELOC, WHERE contains greater detail about the mode of transportation. Users may also consult MTRAV for information about travel apart from location.

Comparability

In US ATUS samples (2003-2024), this variable adheres closely to the unedited location codes reported in the ATUS. Location information was not recorded for a subset of activities, such as sleeping, grooming, and personal activities, as well as episodes where the respondent refused to answer or could not remember the activity they engaged in. IPUMS has chosen to keep these locations as missing. In cases where, for example, a respondent listed a travel activity and a location of "other," IPUMS chose to retain the original location codes even when they do not align with the reported activity.

The 1985+ surveys include further details travelling mode including car, truck, motorcycle, mass transport (public), walking, cycling and other modes of transportation (see MTRAV).
