Description
ELOC reports the location where the activity was performed. ELOC is coded based on the respondent's report of where the activity took place as well as the location implicit in the activity codes. In contrast to WHERE, ELOC collapses all travel activities into the same cateogry.
Comparability
In US ATUS samples (2003-2024), ELOC reproduces WHERE for all non-travel activities. IPUMS identified travel activities based on the original ATUS six-digit activity code, and categorized those records as "traveling" even when the original location was not a mode of travel. Because of this, values for ELOC and WHERE may not be consistent with each other in ATUS samples.
