Description

MTRAV reports the respondent's mode of travel. WHERE and ELOC contain information about where the activity was performed.

Comparability

In US ATUS samples (2003-2024), MTRAV values are based on both location and activity and all non-travel locations and activities are designated as N/A or missing. IPUMS does not generally make a distinction between travel from one destination to another from travel undertaken for recreational purposes (for example, walking or cycling as athletic activity). The exception to this rule is the differentiation between types of boat travel: activities that can clearly be identified as leisure (such as water sports or parties) or diaries that list a boat for the majority of their episodes (such as someone living on a houseboat or work vessel) are coded as 5 - "other travel" rather than 2 - "public transport." We have done our best to identify all such records, but users should be aware that this distinction has been made by IPUMS.
