Description

URBAN reports whether the respondent resides in an urban or rural area.

This variable was provided in the original dataset for the 1965-66, 1975-76 and the 1985 surveys. For the 1992-1995 surveys, this variable was created using the zipcode of the respondent's home address. Please see documentation provided by Oxford's Centre for Time Use Research for more information. For the 2003+ survey years, URBAN is constructed using the 1990 definitions of Metropolitan status.
