Description
SEC reports the secondary activity of the respondent.
Comparability
The variable is comparable from 1965-1985 and 1998 when detailed secondary activities are collected. Information about secondary activities is limited in 1993, 1995, and the ATUS (2003 forward).
Secondary care of children is represented in codes 33-39. Codes 33 and 34 distinguish between general care for children of different ages. In 1965, 1975, 1985, and 1998, code 33 represents care of children ages 0-4. In 1965, code 34 represents care of children ages 5-18; in 1975, 1985, and 1998, code 34 represents care of children ages 5-17, children of mixed ages, or age of children not available. In the ATUS data (2003 forward), code 34 represents care of children ages 0-12. The age of children for whom the respondent provided care is not specified for codes 35-39.
